Clinical studies suggest that only 0.4-2.5% of chromium is absorbed, the actual amount being determined by the environment of the gastrointestinal tract and ligands provided by foods and the microbiome.

Classified as a metal on the periodic table, chromium was not discovered as an essential nutrient until 1959.

It’s now known for its ability to regulate blood sugar and works by stimulating insulin action. Chromium has demonstrated direct involvement in the metabolism of all three macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and protein by potentiating insulin action

Foods that you should consider incorporating into your diet include:

  • Fruits and vegetables: broccoli, potatoes, basil, grape juice, orange juice, apples, bananas 
  • Meats: turkey, beef 
  • Some grains and legumes


Chromium supplements can interact or interfere with some medicines. Here are several examples: 

  • Insulin: Chromium might increase insulin sensitivity
  • Metformin and other anti-diabetes medications: chromium supplements might have an additive effect with metformin or other anti-diabetes medications and might increase the risk of hypoglycaemia
  • Levothyroxine: chromium picolinate supplements decreases levothyroxine absorption
